Statement of Support for the UN Secretary-General’s Call at the Climate Action Summit 2019
JCLP has today issued a Statement of Support for the UN Secretary-General’s Call at the Climate Action Summit 2019, and sent it to the Secretary-General António Guterres.
Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP) is a coalition of 116 Japanese companies that recognize the grave threat climate change poses to business and to a stable society. We are committed to contributing toward the transition to a carbon-neutral economy.
Japan has already felt the harsh impact of climate change in the form of life-threatening heat waves and destructive typhoons, as well as the disruption of corporate supply chains. We know that unless we act fast, these impacts will dramatically worsen, further threatening our lives and properties. We believe that now may be our last chance to seriously tackle this crisis and avoid a catastrophe for humanity.
Sharing the sense of urgency and supporting the leadership of the Secretary-General
In light of the extreme weather disasters and other calamities happening around the world, the Secretary-General António Guterres warns of “a climate emergency,” aiming to draw attention to the urgency and seriousness of the global threat of climate change. You have actively called for concrete plans to avert the crisis, stressing the need for “enhancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement by 2020 and showing how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent over the next decade and get to net zero emissions globally by 2050”[1]. The Secretary-General has also demonstrated strong leadership, telling world leaders to come to the upcoming Climate Action Summit with concrete, realistic plans, rather than speeches, to boost and accelerate specific action[2].
We share the Secretary-General’s strong sense of urgency and supports your efforts, including hosting the Climate Action Summit, by deferring to your leadership in achieving carbon neutrality.
We will also continue working on our decarbonization initiatives and encourage dialogue with the government, people and industries, in order for Japan to contribute to global decarbonization.
Yours Sincerely,
Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP)
