About Japan Climate Leaders Partnership

Japan Climate Leaders Partnership (Japan-CLP) is a coalition of Japanese companies who hold the firm belief that economic prosperity and sustainability go hand in hand. Recognizing the key challenge climate change poses to society its members are committed to bold action and to integrate decarbonization measures into their core business models. It was set up in 2009 to urge the business sector in Japan to develop a sense of urgency on climate and to initiate a more proactive response. Member companies undertake activities with a focus on Japan and Asia and have have also joined global initiatives such as Science Based Targets(SBTs) and RE100. Japan-CLP remains unique in Japan in that a key focus is policy engagement around climate change, aimed at both local and central governments in the country.

Our Mission

1. To achieve a sustainable, decarbonised society with the understanding that this goes hand in hand with economic prosperity.
2. Japan-CLP members themselves commit to bold action on climate change through their own strategies and activities.
3. To proactively conduct policy engagement in Japan and Asia to promote these decarbonization goals.

Core Activities

Japan-CLP has been calling for an ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) from Japan under the Paris Agreement as well as carbon pricing and the expansion of renewable energy in Japan. Our group of companies aims to move the climate issue beyond the realm of CSR/public relations and into core business thinking, which is essential to accelerate the pace of change that is now required.

Japan-CLP's core activities consist of the following.

・Climate and energy policy engagement in Japan, both at the national and local levels.
・Communicating business trends for low carbon energy
  (e.g. through global platforms like RE100, EV100, EP100).
・Convening business collaboration on climate change issues.
・Intelligence gathering and analysis on global and Japan trends relating to the intersection of climate
  change and business.
・Interaction with Japanese and global media on climate issues.

The secretariat of Japan-CLP is based at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), a major Tokyo-based sustainability think tank.
